Alistair has a long history as a researcher, from a Graduate Fellowship at Dalhousie University, by way of Assistant Dramaturg at the Banff School of Fine Arts, to the awarding in 2019 of Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.

He was a Research Associate for the Sidney de Haan Research Centre for Arts & Health; has undertaken consultancy work for Singing for the Brain, the Choir of the Year Competition, Canterbury Cantata Trust and other bodies; and has developed a research project on individual identity and choral singing.

Alistair published a varied list of titles for Harvester Press and the British Library, ranging from collections of early printed music and manuscripts on microfilm, by way of discographies and bibliographies, to an award-winning recording of birdsong and the Bluefoot writers series with poet James Berry.
